14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15 by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.”
Ephesians 2: 14 – 18
This week of Advent we will light the Peace Candle. I love this passage from Ephesians because it reminds us that Jesus came to bring peace, to declare peace, and to be our peace. This peace isn’t a feeling, it’s an act of reconciliation. Jesus, the Prince of Peace, comes to the world to reconcile all brokenness.
I wonder where we need this work of peace to reach us this year? Can we rest in the assurance that we are reconciled to God through Jesus’ work? Can we follow him to resist whatever current hostilities to we carry? There are so many ways to put up walls, to divide ourselves, and to choose hostility over love, and yet none of these will bring us joy. The invitation of this season is to slow down and wonder, to listen and hear the Lord lead us to greener pasture. Let’s encourage one another to move toward peace.
